Unique Landscaping, Designed with Residence in Mind

Landscape Concept by Alex Dalglish – Somewhere Landscapes
The landscape design for Watermark at Castlecove is based on the idea of providing shelter and peace in much the same way that a cove along the coast provides protection. The main internal courtyard includes a series of rounded ‘coves’ at varied levels to provide separate spaces for either individuals or couples up to small groups. Each cove includes tables and seating, lighting and overhead green cover in the form of fragrant deciduous climbers, over a pergola frame. The dining and activity rooms open up onto a large paved area that features small shade trees, an oversized chess set and seating areas. A putting green with 3 holes, is also provided within the main courtyard. Extensive planting areas are included within the internal courtyard to provide for separation of the spaces, and to integrate the pathways that link all of the buildings. All paths within the courtyard provide for equal access for all residents. Also included within this space are raised ‘picking gardens’ for easier access as well as small kitchen trees such as Lemons and Bay Trees, so that you can access your own fresh fruit, flowers and herbs whenever you need them. In the spaces around the building, raised vegetable gardens and fruit trees with nearby seating areas are set within the site, as a place to visit daily to garden or just to pick some vegetables to finish dinner. To make exploration of the native gardens easier, a path system has been implemented that links the outdoor spaces. It passes by dramatic sandstone outcrops and around new trees and shrubs with seating interspersed along the way to provide quiet spaces for reflection and contemplation. The entrance includes a water feature and sculpture as well as lush, layered native vegetation which collectively create a fitting and unique entrance to Watermark. The sculpture by well known artist John Wood, is symbolic of the idea of coming home; coming home to Watermark.

Resident Architect, with best mate Geordie
Incoming resident Russell Jack and best mate Geordie likenothing better than totake a walk in the bushand both are looking forward to making the most of what Castle Cove has to offer when they take up residence at Watermark in April next year. Russell moved to the North Shore in 1925 when his parents made the move from Melbourne to Killara. After leaving school at 18yrs of age Russell joined the Air Force but could not shake the dream he had since he was 10yrs old of becoming an Architect, so commenced his study by correspondence until he could take it up full time. In the final year of study Russell won a traveling award and set sail for Europe meeting his future wife Pamela, also an architect on the trip across. Russell and Pamela married in 1954 on their return to Australia. Some two years later Russell went into practice in Sydney with partner John Allen and commenced John Allen & Russell Jack Architects (Now known as Allen, Jack & Cottier).

In 1956 Russell built the family home in Wahroonga winning the Sulman award for Residential Homes
from The Royal Australian Institute of Architects. This Award winning family home is where Russell and Pamela raised their son and two daughters. Russell feels he had the best of both worlds in his career as he both taught and practiced architecture working initially as a part time teacher then full time at NS W University before retiring in 1997. Russell was widowed some two years ago and felt at this stage it was time to move on and commenced his search for a new home and fresh start for him and Geordie.

Russell found Watermark met all their needs, particularly with an Architect designed apartment that welcomed pets, close to shops, public transport and of course most importantly walking trails and off leash areas for walks with his mate Geordie as well as being much closer to his children.
